How To Use

Important: We strongly recommend using charged biochar for optimal results. Uncharged biochar may absorb nutrients from the surrounding soil, leading to subpar growth in the current season. Applying uncharged biochar delays its benefits until the next season, as it gradually accumulates nutrients over time. This can be okay if you're preparing soil in fall for the upcoming season's garden.

1.

Charging...

Wet and mix the biochar with your favourite fertilizer, compost, or manure. Add enough water for the biochar to be wet and moist. Detailed instructions on mix ratio's can be found below.

2.

Let the Magic Happen

Let the biochar mixture sit. Healthy bacterial life is finding home in the mix. The longer you can leave the mix, the better. Detailed timeframes can be found below.

3.

Apply your new mix!

Add it to your soil as you would regularly with just fertilizer. For existing plantlife, gently work a light layer into the topsoil.

Detailed Ratio's and Timeframes

Using Fertilizer

Soak the biochar in a liquid fertilizer solution for a minimum of 3 hours (though we recommend 1-3 days). Use your favourite fertilizer brand, and follow their dilution instructions. This method is the fastest at charging the biochar, but does not introduce microbes to the mix.

Using Compost

Mix the biochar with compost at a 10-25% biochar to compost ratio. Adding the biochar to the earlier stages of the compost will allow it to mature faster. Let the mixture sit for 2 to 12 weeks, or until the compost is mature.

Using Manure

Mix the biochar with the manure at a 1:1 ratio. Let the mixture sit for at least 2 weeks.

Applying straight to the soil

Mix the biochar into the soil. Let sit for a minimum of 3 months, though we recommend waiting at least 6 before you plant. This option works if you are preparing your soil in the fall for the next spring season.

Other Methods

There are many, many ways of charging biochar. The important things is to introduce nutrients to your mix. Although we recommend using the above methods for charging, we have also heard of some charging their biochar with the following and finding success:

  • Soaking the biochar in urine and letting it sit for a few weeks.
  • Mixing the biochar with a seaweed liquid or powder.
  • Mixing the biochar with wormcastings (50:50 ratio) and letting it sit for 2 weeks.
  • Mixing the biochar with grass clippings and letting it sit for 3 months.
  • Mixing the biochar with a tea fertilizer and letting it sit for a few weeks.
